Process

1. Chimney Inspection
  • Safety First:
Before any work begins, the chimney should be thoroughly inspected to identify any areas of perished or missing mortar.

  • Assess Damage:
Check the mortar joints for crumbling and gaps, and look for damaged or loose lead flashing.
2. Repointing Process
  • Rake Out Mortar:
Carefully remove old, damaged mortar from the joints to a consistent depth of approximately 20-25mm using a suitable tool, like a chisel and hammer, being careful not to damage the brick edges.

  • Clean Joints:
Brush out any remaining mortar dust and debris from the joints.

  • Dampen Surfaces:
Lightly wet the brick and joints to prevent the new mortar from drying out too quickly.

  • Mix New Mortar:
Mix a new mortar, typically a sand and cement mix, using a strong 3:1 or 4:1 sand-to-cement ratio for exposed chimneys.

  • Apply New Mortar:
Trowel the new, sticky mortar firmly into the cleaned joints using a tuck pointer or finger trowel.

  • Finish the Surface:
Smooth the new mortar to the desired pointing style, such as flush, bucket handle, or weather struck, depending on the location and desired aesthetic.

  • Cure the Mortar:
Cover the finished work with damp hessian to allow the mortar to cure slowly and prevent rapid drying.
3. Leadwork Repairs
  • Inspect Flashing:
Examine the lead flashing where the chimney meets the roof for any damage or gaps, as this is a common entry point for water.

  • Repair or Replace:
Repair any holes or replace the damaged flashing to create a watertight barrier.

  • Install Lead Trays:
For added protection, a lead tray can be installed within the stack itself to stop moisture from tracking down the chimney.
4. Repairs and Safety
  • Restore Integrity:
Proper repointing and leadwork will restore the chimney’s structural integrity, prevent water damage, and ensure the security of the chimney.

  • When to Get Professional Help:
For more extensive repairs, unstable chimneys, or complex leadwork, it is essential to hire a qualified professional.

  • Consider Scaffolding:
For larger or more complex jobs, scaffolding may be necessary to provide safe and stable access for the workers.
