Process

Tiling Process
  1. Preparation
Clean, level, and smooth the surface by removing old materials, filling cracks, sanding, and vacuuming up dust. For floors, install a durable, dust-free tile underlayment by scoring, snapping, and securing with corrosion-protected screws.

  2. Layout
Mark the center of the area with a chalk line and perform a “dry layout” to visualize the tile placement and ensure even spacing.

  3. Adhesive Application
Mix the tile adhesive according to the manufacturer’s instructions and apply it to a small, manageable section of the prepared surface using a notched trowel.

  4. Tile Installation
Press tiles firmly into the adhesive, using tile spacers to maintain consistent gaps for grouting and ensuring tiles are level.

  5. Cutting
Measure, mark, and cut tiles as needed to fit around obstacles or edges using a tile cutter or wet saw, wearing safety goggles.

  6. Curing and Grouting
Allow the adhesive to cure for the time specified by the manufacturer, typically 24 hours.

  7. Finishing
Once cured, apply grout to the gaps between tiles using a 45-degree motion to fill the joints deeply. Clean excess grout with a damp sponge, and apply silicone sealant to corners.

Slating Process
  1. Surface Preparation
Install underlayment and batten boards to ensure correct vertical and horizontal spacing for the slates.

  2. Starter Course
Begin with a starter course of half-width or “slate and a half” slates at the eave for waterproofing, followed by full-width eave slates with appropriate gaps.

  3. Brick Bond Pattern
Install successive rows of full slates, overlapping the previous row in a staggered “brick bond” pattern.

  4. Mechanical Fastening
Mechanically fasten the slates to the battens with nails, ensuring the nails just touch the slate without being hammered too far in.

  5. Valleys and Flashing
Install lead or other flashing materials in the roof valleys and at wall abutments for waterproofing.

  6. Top and Ridge Finish
Finish the roof with smaller half-height slates at the top, and install ridge tiles with a recommended overlap onto the slates.
