Process
Felt, or modified bitumen, roofing typically uses a three-layer system, often applied with a torch for a waterproof seal.
- Surface Preparation: The existing surface must be cleaned, dry, and free of debris.
- Venting Base Sheet: A layer of venting base sheet is applied to prevent moisture buildup.
- Reinforced Felt Underlay: A reinforced felt layer is added for extra protection.
- Mineral Cap Sheet: A final layer, often a mineral cap sheet, provides UV and physical damage resistance.
- Application: The felt is often adhered by torch-on application, using heat to melt the bitumen and bond it to the roof.
- OSB Deck Installation:OSB (Oriented Strand Board) boards are installed to create a flat, suitable roof deck.
- Edge Trims:GRP edge trims are installed to create a border around the roof area.
- Resin Application:A mixture of resin and a catalyst is applied to the roof surface and the bandage on the trims.
- Fibreglass Laminating:Fibreglass matting is then cut and laid over the resin, which is “wet out” using a roller to saturate the glass strands.
- Topcoat:A protective topcoat is applied once the laminate is no longer sticky, typically within 24 hours.
- Professional Installation:Both felt and GRP roofing require specialized skills, so it is best to hire experienced professionals to ensure correct installation and maximize the lifespan of the roof.
- Weather Conditions:GRP roofing must be installed in dry weather, with an ambient temperature between 7°C and 30°C, for proper curing.
- Safety:Torch-on felt roofing involves open flame and requires strict adherence to safety protocols.
