Process
- Locate the perfect spot: for the sky window, ensuring it’s structurally sound.
- Mark the position: for the skylight inside the room.
- Prepare tools and materials, including the window, flashing kit designed for the specific roofing material, and necessary fasteners.
- Support the roof rafters: by fitting header joists perpendicular to the existing rafters, creating a strong frame for the opening.
- Cut out the hole: for the sky window, ensuring all edges are level and even, using a circular saw.
- Cut back the existing roofing material, like shingles or tiles, to expose the necessary area around the opening.
- Position and secure the window frame: into the framed opening, using screws or nails into the battens.
- Install the flashing kit, which is crucial for a watertight seal.
- Apply underlay roofing paper strips to allow water to escape.
- Install bottom flashing around the base of the skylight and top of the shingles.
- Fit step flashing pieces under the roof shingles on the sides, overlapping them to prevent leaks.
